Appointment of Book Review Editors for ‘Sociology of Health and Illness’

The journal Sociology of Health and Illness is looking to recruit two book review editors to begin in October 2024. The core activities are identifying relevant books for review, seeking and liaising with reviewers, and reviewing and editing contributions. The journal publishes approximately 35 reviews a year; this is usually 4-5 reviews, each review being ~800 words, across 8 journal issues.

Month-to-month, the activities take up approximately 3-4 hours each week. They will be supported by Professor Janice McLaughlin and Dr Gareth Thomas as the incoming Co-Chief-Editors of the journal. The book editors will receive nominal compensation each year to support their own research activities.

Applications are welcome from individuals in academic positions. We particularly encourage applications from early career colleagues, and colleagues located outside the UK, especially the Global South. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of medical sociology as a discipline.

Applications should include:

  1. A 300-word summary on why the applicant/s are appropriate for the role and how they would approach it
  2. A one-page CV for each applicant

Applicants may apply separately or as a duo.

All applications should be sent to Janice McLaughlin (janice.mclaughlin@newcastle.ac.uk) and Gareth Thomas (thomasg23@cf.ac.uk) by 30 April 2024. Questions and clarifications can also be directed to Janice and Gareth.

Finally, a huge thank you to Gillian Love (University of Sussex) and Shadreck Mwale (University of West London), who have held this position since October 2018, for all of their hard work and support of the journal over the years.
