Guidance Notes for Postgraduate Student Conference Travel Applications

1. Submission: submit the completed form electronically to the chair of the trustees (m.bloor@socsci.gla.ac.uk), and send one signed hard copy to:

The hard copy must be signed by both the applicant and his/her postgraduate supervisor.

2. Accompanying the hard copy, applicant should include documentary proofs of both the conference (fee and accommodation) costs (e.g. a costed application form) and approximate travel costs (e.g. an internet quotation for air fares).

3. The maximum sum available is £750.

4. Eligibility:
(a) Eligible applicants should be registered part-time or full-time for a masters or PhD in a UK university. They do not have to be a UK or EU citizen.
(b) The conference should be an appropriate one for the presentation for a medical sociology paper.
(c) The applicant should intend to be a presenter or co-presenter of a medical sociology paper at the conference.
(d) It is not necessary for the paper to have been either submitted or accepted at the time of application for funding. However, the Foundation will not fund conference attendance and travel for a paper that is not accepted. Successful applicants must submit documentary evidence of acceptance (e.g. a conference programme) when applying for reimbursement.

5. Processing of applications:
The trustees will do their best to respond within six weeks of receipt of application. The trustees regret that they cannot give feedback on the reasons for unsuccessful applications. Successful applicants should submit evidence of their conference attendance and travel costs to Prof Bloor as soon as possible after conference attendance for reimbursement. The upper limit for reimbursement is £750.
