This charitable Foundation was established as the result of
a decision taken at the April 1996 meeting of the Editorial Board
of Sociology of Health and Illness.
This journal, published by Blackwells, had been started in 1978
and by the early1990's had become very successful with the result
that income was increasing every year. Members had begun to express
concern about the potential liability for tax and also their own
possible personal liability the position of the treasurer causing
particular unease. The Board therefore decided to explore the
existence of legal structures which would allow surpluses to be
used for charitable purposes such as the advancement of scholarship
in the field of the journal.
After lengthy discussions and consultations about the form this
would take, the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness
was finally approved in December 1999.
This charitable Foundation is a private company limited by guarantee
and not having a share capital. It has its registered office in
England. Wrigleys Solicitors, 19 Cookridge Street, Leeds LS2 3AG.
Clare Booth of Wrigleys is the Secretary of the Charity.
The money derived from producing the Journal goes to the Foundation after
payment of administrative expenses.
The Charity then provides monies for the Editorial board to produce
the Journal on behalf of the Charity.
To this end the Charity has entered into
(i) a 10 year contract with Blackwell Publishers and
(ii) with Nottingham University (where the editors are now based)
for editorial services.
The bulk of the income therefore goes into production of the
journal and the remainder to other projects. At present we are
inviting applications for funding for symposia and workshops and
also for a small number of post-graduate awards.
