Applications for an SHI Foundation Collaborative Studentships
Background
The Foundation for Sociology of Health & Illness is the charity which owns
the journal 'Sociology of Health & Illness'. In order to pursue
the objectives of the charity, which are 'to promote and improve
social scientific research, education and scholarship in the field
of the sociology of health and illness', the trustees of the foundation
have agreed to fund a number of initiatives including a postgraduate
award scheme.
Object of the Collaborative Studentships:
In establishing these studentships, the trustees are looking
to encourage departments offering postgraduate scholarships from
their own internal resources to consider creating scholarships
on medical sociological topics, by providing cash incentives to
students and departments for suitable work in this area.
The SHI Foundation would operate like the collaborating agency
in the ESRC Case Awards scheme: the Foundation award would be
conditional on departmental and/or institutional support (payment
of fees and a maintenance allowance), but the Foundation would
offer £3000 pa to the successful department and £8000
pa to the successful student. The Foundation would aim to support
at least one and perhaps two new four-year PhD student per annum.
The £3000 pa payment to the department could be used as
the department saw fit - as a contribution to fees, to the student
stipend, to fieldwork expenses, or to some combination of these.
Applications should be made on the form for SHI Foundation Collaborative Studentships
by the would-be principal supervisor. The successful applicant
should make his/her own arrangements to allocate the award to
a suitable student following equal opportunities principles. The
Foundation should be named in all advertising.
Please address any queries about the application process or eligibility to
Michael Bloor at M.Bloor@socsci.gla.ac.uk.
At the time of the award being made, the trustees of the Foundation will make
every effort to ensure that the Foundation is in a financial position
to make all future installments of the award, and the Foundation
manages its reserves with this purpose in mind. But the trustees
give notice that the continuance of the awards over future years
will nevertheless be subject to the continuing financial health
of the Foundation.
