Introduction
This award scheme is intended to support the development of medical and health sociology by funding symposia, workshops, or a series of symposia or workshops which address important issues in the field. A maximum of £2,000 will be provided to support a single symposium or workshop and a maximum of £15,000 to support a series over a two year period.
Eligibility
Applications will be considered from meeting organisers based in a UK University or research institution for meetings to be held in the UK. At least one of the organisers should have a track record of research and publication in medical or health sociology.
Applicants should be organising a symposium or workshop which addresses important issues for medical or health sociology. The Trustees are particularly keen to support meetings with promote discussion and debate on inter-disciplinary themes of wide public relevance, and meetings with an international or comparative dimension.
While speakers may be by invitation, attendance should be open to anyone with an interest in the theme of the meeting (up to a specified maximum).
Basic support from the applicants’ institution, for example by providing the venue for the meeting, is expected. Applications which include other sources of funding are also encouraged.
Trustees will not be eligible for awards but other members of their Department will not be excluded from applying.
Application procedure and post award processes
Applications should be made by the meeting organisers, well in advance of the meeting, using the Application Form below.
Applications for support for one-day or two-day symposia will be considered, with funding up to a maximum of £2,000 for these events. Applications for a series of workshops or symposia over a period of up to two years will also be considered, with funding (pro-rata) up to a maximum of £15,000 for a series of 8 or more meetings. In both cases, applicants should make clear in their application what contribution their meeting will make to the development of medical or health sociology.
Applications will be considered by a Panel of three Trustees of the Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness. Decisions are normally made within six weeks of receipt of an application and applicants will be informed as soon as possible after a decision has been made. The Trustees regret that they cannot give feedback on applications or the reasons for unsuccessful applications.
